The River Gara Water Vole Reintroduction Project
The aim of the above project is to reinstate a species that would once have been abundant in our local waterways. We have lost almost 90 percent of our native water voles largely due to escaped American mink but also due to loss of habitat and pollution. Having released 325 water voles in 4 different sites on the Gara, The Habitat Group are now consolidating those populations with 2 further releases in the Start valley, one at the end of August and the second in late spring of next year. This has been achieved thanks to funds from the DEFRA Farming in Protected Landscape scheme and local fundraising.
