Stay safe when swimming outdoors in the hot weather
With hot weather and an amber heat health alert in place Devon County Council are conscious that more people will be heading to the coast and are reminding them that it important to be aware of the risks. Even though it's warm outside the water temperature can still be very cold.

With hot weather and an amber heat health alert in place, more people will be heading to the coast, rivers and lakes. It’s important to be aware of the risks. Even though it’s warm outside the water temperature is still very cold.
Cold water shock, strong tides, currents and hidden hazards can affect even experienced swimmers. Taking a few simple precautions can help keep you and others safe.
- Choose lifeguarded areas
- Enter the water gradually
- Stay within your depth
- Always be supervised
- If you get into difficulty, float on your back to help stay afloat
Always keep an eye on children and less confident swimmers, and don’t forget to reapply sunscreen after getting out of the water.
