Councillor

Cllr Colin Staines

I came to live in Slapton 20 years ago this year. I had taken early retirement from my last job in Amersham, South Buckinghamshire. I moved here from Beaconsfield, South Buckinghamshire where I had spent most of my life. Leaving School, I spent the first three years in the Merchant Navy. After leaving the Merchant Navy, I took a few manual jobs (picking, packing and forklift truck driving). I was a Supervisor in one job until I was made redundant through no fault of my own. I regularly took First Aid courses but never did I use it for emergencies at work. My way of exercising was playing rugby with a rugby club on Saturdays during the rugby season. Injury to my back caused me to retire early.

When I moved here to Slapton, I was made welcome from my first day. When an opportunity came for me to contribute to this Village by serving as a Councillor, I took the opportunity and wish to carry on as long as I am able.

My wife, Sue, who is also the only Churchwarden at our Church, and I, are Season ticket holders at Exeter Chiefs in Exeter. They are our nearest Premiership Rugby Club. I am a Life Member of Camra (Campaign of Real Ale) and love drinking Real Ale/Cider. I go every year (mostly in April) to AGMs to various cities.  I have been a member for 40 years.

At the Church, I am a bellringer, music box player and taker of a few Matin Services. I am a member of Slapton Parochial Church Council.
