The Citizens Advice service was set up by the government at the start of the Second World War to respond to the needs of the population and help with the fledgling social welfare service. Interestingly, the problems they help people with haven’t changed much since then.
Citizens Advice is no longer part of the government but a network of 300 local Citizens Advice charities across England and Wales that work together to provide advice and support services for local people and to campaign on national issues.
Every year, Citizens Advice South Hams helps around 5,000 people through face to face, telephone and email services.
As well as generalist support, they have specialist advisers who can support on a wide range of issues: debt problems; making benefits claims and appealing decisions; housing matters; family, relationship and neighbour issues; consumer problems; and health related matters.
